Renaissance ancient town of Telč, called the Venice of Moravia, also UNESCO’s world heritage site, gives the impression of fairytale-town; therefore, a number of fairy tales and historical movies were filmed there. The city takes pride in having Gothic Chateau and the most picturesque town square of our country - Zacharias of Hradec Square. The Square alone consists of 71 houses that rose in the Gothic plots, mostly before the 1530. An arcade, which was built around the perimeter of the square around the mid 16th century, creates the typical character of the square. Qualified Italian artists helped transform the Gothic dwellings into neat looking houses. The Třebíč Jewish monuments, together with the ones found in Jerusalem, are the only ones that have been separately listed on the UNESCO list. This exceptional architectural complex is extremely well preserved. The only comparable ghetto in Europe can perhaps
be found only in Venice. Třebíč once belonged to the important centers of Jewish culture in Moravia and uniquely preserved Jewish quarter is a mute testament to co-existence of Jews and Christians. The Jewish quarter with its dense housing includes more than 120 homes complemented by the buildings of the former Jewish institutions - synagogues, town hall, rabbinate and the poorhouse. Part of it is a Jewish cemetery, where approximately 3000 tombstones can be seen - the oldest one dates to the year 1631.
